On field, the AFL team has quickly grown into one of the competition’s most exciting teams with several players becoming household names across the country. Likewise, the on-field achievements of our AFL Women’s and GIANTS Netball teams are seeing the club connect with more fans and followers than ever before.

Off field, the club’s exciting, innovative, and fresh brand is growing as it engages with members, fans, the community and key stakeholders across Western Sydney, Canberra and Nationally.

The GIANTS AFL and AFL Women’s teams are based at the club’s elite training and administration facility in Sydney Olympic Park, with GIANTS Netball based adjacent at Netball Central.

Position Purpose

The Development Coach is primarily responsible for leading the development of the club’s talented young footballers (predominantly first to fourth year players) and working with the Head of Development and other coaches in a high-performance environment to help the club achieve success. This includes playing a lead role in setting, driving and maintaining a positive, safe and supportive development program.

The Development Coach will help plan, manage and lead the development program that supports the development and progression of well prepared (physically, emotionally, socially, game play, skills, etc.) athletes ready for AFL football. A key objective of the role is to ensure optimal individual development of both the athletes and the club.

Roles and Responsibilities

Development 

  • Work with the Head of Development and other Development Coaches to develop talented young footballers to the maximum of their ability.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of the club’s development program.
  • Assist in production and implementation of Individual Player Development plans, both in planning and delivery.
  • Work with Head of Development and coaching staff to educate players on game plan and program requirements.

Recruitment

  • Work with recruitment team to identify potential draftees and new talent.
  • Work with recruitment team on handover of new players from recruitment to induction.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of the induction program at the club.
  • Regularly connect with the recruiting team on development of young players.

Welfare

  • Work with the Welfare and Player Development Manager to ensure players are well supported during their time in the program.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, respectful and enjoyable environment for all those involved in the program.

VFL Program

  • Work with VFL Head Coach to assist with coaching and administration support in the VFL program.
  • Support development of VFL-listed players at the club.
  • Provide connection and support for Academy players and temporary VFL players while participating in the program.
