We have an exciting opportunity to join PNG Rugby League as we continue to work towards a successful bid to enter the NRL Competition. With the growth of Rugby League in PNG, a key focus is developing pathways through our School and Youth competitions.

This newly created role involves managing and supporting Junior School Competitions in five major locations across the country.

The PNG Rugby Football League is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in Papua New Guinea. It is a full member of the International Rugby League and is represented internationally in the female game as the PNG Orchids and in the male game as the PNG Kumuls. Domestically it is responsible for the National Club Competitions the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup (male), Santos Club (female), Community and School Rugby League. Also, the PNG Hunters Franchise which competes in the Queensland Rugby League’s Host Plus Cup competition. 

 PNGRFL mission is to create Better People for a Better Sport to ensure a Better Nation.

Rugby League is the official national sport of Papua New Guinea, the only nation in the world with such status and the sport unifies the country. 

This exciting new opportunity in PNG Rugby League is part of the continuing work of developing the youth in the the sport as we head towards a successful bid to enter the NRL Competition.

About the role:

Reporting to the General Manger of PNGRFL Pathways and Performance the principal duties of this role include: 

  • Delivering a high quality, compliant and consistent Junior School Rugby League Competitions in five major locations across PNG.
  • Educating, mentoring, accrediting and supporting the current volunteers, players, coaches, match officials, schools, clubs and Leagues in five local competitions. 
  • Working closely with those volunteers, Associations, Affiliate Leagues, Pathway Clubs across the identified PNGRFL performance ecosystem to with a focus of growth.
  • Planning and designing the future National Youth competitions.
  • Leading the PNGRFL Pathways and Performance Department education, training and system building initiatives for the five areas. 
  • Focusing strongly on working collaboratively and building harmonious relationships with volunteers, schools, Leagues, PNGRFL staff and contracted specialists to facilitate capability initiatives.
  • Adopting a succession planning mentality with regards to staff recruitment and development, maximizing opportunities for PNG nationals to learn, upskill, be mentored and developed for future roles in the PNGRFL Pathways and Performance system.

About You 

The candidate will require skills and experience of:

  • Five plus years’ experience working in operational delivery and administration of Community and Youth Rugby league competitions and/or other sports.
  • Demonstrable experience and skills in planning, coordinating and administrating sporting competitions.
  • Being able to conceptualise and lead programs with presence, purpose, application and deliver positive impact.
  • Experience and/or demonstrated understanding of the sensitivities and challenges of working within multi-cultural environments.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and management skills, with clubs, schools, volunteers, parents, sponsors, media and senior management.  
  • Willingness to be based predominantly in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea for the duration of the contract.
  • Understanding of Sports Accreditation frameworks, Competition Integrity and Governance systems.     
  • Tertiary qualifications in sports management would be advantageous, but candidates with other high calibre credentials will be considered.

Additonal Inofrmation:
