Position Summary:
The Head of Player Development is responsible for establishing and executing a comprehensive development framework designed to elevate players’ skills, game knowledge, and personal growth. This role will play a critical part in ensuring that every player is given the resources, mentorship, and guidance needed to reach their full potential. Through individual development plans, assessment, and collaboration with the broader football department, the Head of Player Development will foster an environment that encourages continuous learning and progression in all facets of the game.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Execute Individual Player Development Plans: Create tailored, individualised development plans that cater to each player’s strengths, areas for improvement, and personal goals.
Build Strong, Trusting Relationships with Players: Act as a mentor and support system for players, building trust and open communication to foster a supportive environment where players feel empowered to discuss challenges and seek guidance.
Oversee On-Field Skill Development Programs: Work with coaches to develop specialised drills and training sessions aimed at enhancing core skills, decision-making abilities, and game tactics, ensuring players can adapt and excel at the highest levels.
Facilitate Off-Field Growth and Wellbeing: Implement programs to promote mental resilience, goal setting, self-reflection, and leadership qualities. Collaborate with the welfare and medical team to support players’ overall wellbeing, including mental health, recovery, and lifestyle management.
Conduct Regular Performance Reviews and Feedback Sessions: Monitor each player’s progress through regular assessments, performance reviews, and structured feedback sessions. Use data and video analysis to provide clear, actionable insights that help players understand their development journey.
Develop Tactical Knowledge and Game Intelligence: Ensure that players have a thorough understanding of game strategies, positioning, and situational decision-making, empowering them to make effective contributions in all game scenarios.
Collaborate Across Football Department for Holistic Development: Work closely with coaches, sports scientists, physiotherapists, and welfare staff to deliver an integrated approach to development. Ensure each player receives a well-rounded experience that addresses all dimensions of their growth.
Champion a Positive, Inclusive Club Culture: Lead by example in promoting a culture that values hard work, resilience, respect, and accountability. Instil a sense of pride and belonging in the club’s values, creating an environment where players thrive individually and as a team.
Support Career Transition Pathways: Assist players in navigating transitions within and beyond their football careers, providing them with career development resources and support networks to prepare them for life after sport.
Key Requirements:
Experience in High-Performance Football Environments: Demonstrated experience within AFL, VFL, or similar competitive environments, with a strong understanding of the requirements for player development.
Holistic Approach to Development: Comprehensive knowledge of player development principles, encompassing technical skills, physical training, mental resilience, and personal growth.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Ability to connect meaningfully with players and staff, fostering a high-trust environment and maintaining open lines of communication.
Commitment to Inclusive and Safe Environments: A deep commitment to building a culture where all players feel supported, valued, and able to develop their unique strengths in a safe, inclusive space.
Strategic Planning and Evaluation Skills: Competence in designing long-term development frameworks, as well as in implementing and evaluating them for continuous improvement.
Relevant Qualifications: Degree or certification in sports management, coaching, sports science, psychology, or a related field is highly desirable.
Level 2 AFL Coaching Accreditation (or willingness to obtain).
Valid Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain).
