This rare part-time Doctor opportunity offers the chance to join St Kilda’s well-established AFLW program, which is poised for a club-record season. It’s an exciting time to be part of a team on the brink of a breakthrough year.
Reporting to the Executive General Manager AFLW, this pivotal role is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of AFLW players, ensuring their safe and effective return to play following injury, and providing expert medical care across all aspects of their performance and health. As the AFLW Doctor, you will manage player injury prevention, diagnosis and treatment while also offering crucial advice to coaches, players, and staff on injury risks and performance impact. With a focus on compliance with medical regulations and maintaining the highest standards of care, you will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team and provide medical coverage during matches and training.

ABOUT THE ROLE
- Player Health & Injury Management: Oversee injury prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; advise on injury prognosis and performance impact; collaborate on rehabilitation plans; ensure player health and regulatory compliance.
- Medical Coverage: Provide medical care at matches and training (local and interstate); manage emergencies; conduct player assessments; offer 24-hour on-call support.
- Advisory Role: Advise coaches, players, and staff on injury impact, prevention, and overall health, including nutrition and mental well-being.
- Compliance with Regulations: Ensure compliance with AFL rules, anti-doping, and medical ethics; maintain confidential and accurate medical records.
- Collaboration: Work with physiotherapists, performance teams, and AFL medical staff to monitor player health and provide updates on fitness and injury status.
- Professional Development: Stay updated with the latest sports medicine practices.
- Stakeholder Relationships: Develop and maintain relationships with AFLPA, AFL, and VFL affiliates.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Medical degree with significant postgraduate experience in the management of sports injuries within elite sporting teams.
- Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Medicine, or a Diploma in Sports Medicine (desirable).
- Current driver’s licence.
- Strong ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
- Familiarity with AFL regulations, anti-doping codes, and relevant policies.
AVAILABILITY
Pre-season (May to Aug):
- Attendance onsite for all official AFLW practice matches.
- Attendance onsite at two contact training sessions per week, currently scheduled for Monday morning and Thursday afternoon.
- Available on call for phone contact or in-clinic player consultations.
- Attendance for medical and concussion screening sessions.
In-season (Aug to Nov):
- Attendance onsite for all official AFLW match days.
- Attendance onsite for two contact training sessions per week, currently scheduled for Monday morning and Thursday afternoon.
- Attendance onsite for one non-contact training session per week, currently schedule for Tuesday afternoon.
- Available on call for phone contact or in-clinic player consultations.
Off-season (November to May):
- Available on call for phone contact or in-clinic player consultations.
- Available for remote/in person discussion with Club medical and high performance team regarding player management.
- Attendance onsite for exit medicals, end of season medical summary/ forward planning.
