About the Victorian Institute of Sport:
The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) was set up to assist the development of Victoria’s best athletes. It was established in 1990 by the State Government as a private trustee company, with its Board of Directors appointed by the Victorian Minister for Sport.
The VIS is located at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The VIS headquarters completed a renovation in February 2023, providing a brand new workspace for athletes and staff. It is a non-residential institute, which utilises Melbourne’s outstanding sporting facilities, to allow high performance athletes to live and train in Melbourne, the sporting capital of Australia.
The VIS operates in partnership with National Sporting Organisations and State Sporting Associations to deliver high performance daily training environments (DTEs) for sports and athletes in support of the National High Performance Sport Strategy outcomes. Our facility and staff help prepare and support future and current Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth Games and World Champion athletes.

About the role:
The primary purpose of this role is to use data science methods to enhance the organisation’s ability to understand and act on its data. This includes applying your knowledge of data science principles to uncover actionable insights, designing and maintaining data collection and processing pipelines, and developing interactive dashboards and reports.
A key focus is ensuring insights are effectively translated into recommendations that support sport and organisational objectives. This includes delivering insights to both technical and non-technical audiences, requiring strong communication skills to convey complex concepts clearly and effectively. You will be expected to apply your knowledge and domain expertise relating to data science, and work with sporting domain specialists who may have limited understanding and experience with data science methods.
Job responsibilities may include but not limited to:
- Assist in the implementation of VIS Data Intelligence Strategy.
- Design and implement advanced analytics techniques to analyse athlete performance, generate actionable insights, and support decision-making in high-performance sport.
- Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends and actionable insights that support sporting and organisational objectives.
- Assist in designing and developing interactive dashboards, reports, and visualisations to that enable stakeholders to interpret their data and make informed decisions.
- Deliver insights to both technical and non-technical audiences, including performance discipline leads, coaches, and organisational teams, using effective communication skills to explain complex findings in actionable terms.
- Assist in automating routine data tasks to enhance efficiency, reduce manual effort, and drive innovation across performance disciplines.
- Perform data cleaning and validation tasks to ensure data quality, accuracy, and usability.
- Collaborate with domain experts to define data requirements and ensure data solutions meet their needs.
- Document workflows, processes, and methodologies to support transparency, reproducibility, and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to the administration of the Athlete Management System (AMS), including development, maintenance, and user support.
Required qualifications/ experience:
- Tertiary degree in data science, computer science, mathematics, economics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated analytical skills, with the ability to assess complex problems and identify actionable insights.
- Strong communication skills to deliver highly complex findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Highly developed conceptual and problem-solving skills, including the demonstrated ability to quickly identify, analyse and research complex situations to devise appropriate strategies.
- Strong data storytelling and visualisation skills to deliver complex findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Knowledge of R and SQL programming languages for data manipulation and analysis.
- Experience using Shiny and Markdown to develop and deploy interactive applications and reports.
- Current Victorian Working with Children Check (must be in place before employment commences).
- Successful completion and currency of Level 1 & 2 Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) accreditation.
- Successful completion of SIA "Keep Sport Honest" Anti-match fixing education components.
Desirable qualifications/ experience
- Experience working with an Athlete Management System (AMS), preferably Teamworks.
- Experience working with cloud-based infrastructure (Snowflake, Azure, AWS etc.).
- Familiar with online code repository platforms (GitHub, GitLab etc.).
- Familiar with Linux operating systems.
- A passion for sport and knowledge of international and national high-performance sport best practice (highly desirable).
