About the team - The Finance and Governance Group is responsible for driving strategic financial management and governance across the ASC through a broad range of financial management services and governance processes and procedures.

About the role - The role of Director Management Accounting and Finance Strategy is pivotal to the strategic financial stewardship of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). This position demands a forward-thinking leader with a deep understanding of finance and strategy, a strong ability to drive transformation, and a passion for building financial capability across the organisation. Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and other key stakeholders, the role champions initiatives that enhance financial sustainability, operational efficiency, and value creation.

As a leader of the Management Accounting and Finance Strategy branch, this role ensures the overall integrity of the ASC’s internal and external budget allocations, capital allocations and financial position, drives process improvements and innovative solutions, and delivers impactful insights that support strategic decision-making. By fostering collaboration, promoting excellence, and maintaining a people-centric approach, the role aligns closely with the ASC Way values - Excellence, Integrity, Respect, and Teamwork - while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and high performance.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to shape the financial future of the ASC, ensuring its financial practices and outcomes align with the organisation's strategic goals and priorities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Directing a team of professionals in providing strategic budgeting and financial reporting advice and robust analysis to the CFO and Executive Team on the ASC’s financial performance, risks and financial strategy.
  • Developing and driving the annual ASC internal budgeting processes to establish clear and achievable operational and capital budgets.
  • Managing all financial aspects of the ASC’s external budget process including input into the Portfolio Budget Statements, intra-year budget updates, developing business cases and costings for New Policy Proposals (NPPs) and liaising with the Department of Finance and Department of Health and Aged Care.
  • Managing the development and implementation of financial frameworks, policies, guidelines and other resources that deliver business outcomes for the ASC.
  • Working with the CFO to identify strategic finance initiatives, reforms and process improvements to support the ASC’s strategic priorities and build financial capability.
  • Developing and implementing strategic financial initiatives and projects to enhance financial sustainability, including overseeing change management and actively managing stakeholder expectations.
  • Providing deep insights, recommendations and thought leadership on business activities, opportunities to grow value (including return on assets), and improvements to operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Identifying and driving the implementation of cost-saving opportunities and realisation of efficiency gains.
  • Leading the development of financial models, profitability analysis and dashboards to provide real-time insights and support strategic planning and decision-making including in relation to existing, proposed and new commercial activities.
  • Producing ad hoc financial analysis and reports for the Board, FAR Committee, Executive Team and Government.
  • Building organisational capability and understanding of financial performance through presenting and explaining complex financial information in an accessible manner to non-finance professionals.
  • Evaluating and managing financial risks associated with business activities, ensuring the ASC’s financial practices are robust and mitigate exposure.

About you - We are looking for highly motivated individual with strong financial skills and business acumen, excellent communication skills, and experience in managing financial resources, business planning, financial modelling, analysis and reporting to support strategic decision making, and business process improvement.

Candidates are expected to have experience managing a diverse team, as well as a detailed understanding and experience of financial management in Government. Key capabilities and skills include:

  • Extensive senior level experience in a financial role developing, analysing, monitoring and advising on internal and external budgets and financial performance, including engagement with relevant stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen and experience in the development of financial models, profitability analysis and dashboards to provide real-time insights and support strategic planning and decision-making around business activities (including commercial activities and return on assets).

  • Proven experience in delivering finance process and system improvements to efficiently deliver contemporary, tailored financial reporting, analysis and insights to senior leaders to support business decision making.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial modelling, analysis, and reporting and excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven experience preparing reports for senior leaders and key external stakeholders and presenting complex financial information in an accessible manner to non-finance professionals.

Essential skills and qualifications:
