The Assistant Coach will be a club representative for inspiring, motivating and driving up the standard and competitive participation of the club. They will be respected, approachable, experienced and fair, able to manage a diverse and wide range of members. They will have club culture and participation as a core focus.
The Assistant Coach will run club-wide rowing program based on recognised coaching standards and philosophy established by the Head Coach. They will be willing to coach and share information to all club members, with a passion for excellence, directed toward recruiting, educating, coaching, nurturing and retaining athletes and coaches as life-long MRC members.
Potential for role to be lengthened beyond 4 months, including greater input to design, implement and continuously improve the rowing program with the Head Coach.
Rowing Program - Up to 25% of the role varying at different times of the season
- Implement a “Melbourne way” of rowing based on international standards and trends established by the Head Coach.
- Be a club authority on rowing skills and training best practice in conjunction with the Head Coach
- Be approachable, transparent and fair, motivating and encouraging members to be their best.
Coaching - 75% of the role varying at different times of the season
- Provide coaching across 5 x 2hr sessions a week to all-comers (any members choosing to attend) those sessions. Maximize intra-crew and club harmony across these sessions.
- Recruit and coordinate volunteer coaches across the coaching sessions.
- Motivate, educate and mentor volunteer coaches, continuously improving skills with feedback.
- Drive and support coach accreditation across the volunteer coaching group.
- Provide feedback in a variety of ways to athletes and coaches including direct and video-based with individuals, athletes, coxes and coaches tailored to accelerate improvement and maximise personal performance.
The Assistant Coach will work alongside the Head Coach and Club Administrator to implement the rowing program and enhance the overall culture and performance of the club.
The Assistant Coach will maintain professional and ethical behaviour, abiding by the MRC Code of Conduct.
Conflicts of interest will be declared in the first instance to the President and Captain, but also regularly at the Committee meetings.
Skills
- People management, including coordinating and communicating with members of all levels.
- Advanced, evolving knowledge and application of rowing technique and athletic performance.
- Negotiation, influencing and conflict resolution.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Moderate level of computer literacy including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook/Email) and use of productivity apps to delivery and manage the program (eg. TeamApp).
- Report preparation and presentation.
Experience
- At least 3 years of Coaching experience in a Club/School program.
- Track record of increasing participation in a program year-on-year.
- Track record progress and improved performance year-on-year.
- Track record of simultaneously coordinating more than 50 active participants in a program.
Qualifications
- Level 2 NCAS Rowing Coaching Accreditation (minimum).
- First aid certificate.
- Current boat and drivers’ licenses.
- BRO accreditation preferred.

- Working with Children (WWC) certification.
- Workcover proof of currency.
- Professional Indemnity proof of currency.
