The Opportunity

We're seeking a dynamic General Manager - Government Relations to lead our engagement with government agencies, policymakers, and key stakeholders. This senior role will drive strategic partnerships, advocacy initiatives, and commercial outcomes that support the NBL's growth objectives. You'll ensure strong relationships with government bodies at all levels and foster sustainable growth through effective policy engagement and funding opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive government relations strategy to enhance the NBL's presence and influence with federal, state, and local governments
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with key government officials, policymakers, and agencies to secure funding, grants, and policy support
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting the sports industry and provide strategic advice to the executive team
  • Prepare policy submissions, briefing papers, and reports to advocate for the NBL's interests
  • Drive partnerships with government, non-profits, and corporate entities to support positive commercial outcomes
  • Identify bespoke government insights and build proposals to secure funding for NBL strategic initiatives
  • Work closely with clubs, State Sporting Associations, and the National Sporting Organisation to strengthen basketball participation
  • Develop initiatives that leverage basketball as a tool for social change, including programs for Indigenous communities, refugees, and people with disabilities
  • Ensure compliance with government policies and regulations affecting the NBL

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Business, Sports Management, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in government relations, public affairs, or policy advocacy, preferably in the sports or entertainment sector
  • Proven track record in securing funding and managing government partnerships
  • Strong understanding of government funding structures, policy development, and regulatory frameworks
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, with experience preparing policy submissions
  • Strong leadership qualities and ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams
  • Ability to operate at a fast pace in a high-pressure, ever-changing environment
  • Passion for basketball and its role in creating social impact
