About the Role: 

As the General Manager - Victoria, reporting to the Head of Community Support & Events, the General Manager – VIC is primarily focused on providing efficient and effective support to affiliated Clubs and Class Associations in their State. This will be done via the successful delivery and implementation of Australian Sailing services and programs to ensure sustainable growth in club membership and participation, as well as club governance and operations.. 

Principal Accountabilities: 

The General Manager - VIC will have the following accountabilities:

  • Lead, influence and manage:
    • Provide strong, effective leadership and direction to Australian Sailing stakeholders and the sport of sailing generally throughout the State to ensure future development and promotion through well executed sport and event related programs.
    • Assume the overall responsibility for the management of the day-to-day operations of Australian Sailing in VIC, including all the human and financial resources, driving and developing the business consistent with the agreed strategic direction.
    • In conjunction with the Head of Community Support & Events, staff, Committees and membership, further develop and implement the strategic plan, across the whole-of-business in VIC.
    • Develop the annual operating budget and manage the operations in accordance with the agreed goals in order to ensure the ongoing financial sustainability of the organisation within VIC. This includes optimising relevant revenue streams where appropriate.
    • Implement, manage and monitor appropriate workplace, safety and health practices and policies contributing to a zero-harm safety culture across Australian Sailing, its members and events.
    • Provide effective and active representation of Australian Sailing at all levels. Develop and enhance relationships with key stakeholders:
      • Clubs & Classes
      • State Member Yachting Association (MYA) or Regional Advisory Committee (RAC).
      • State Government – including State Funded projects/expectations.
    • Provide support for the State MYA / RAC:
      • Be the conduit for communication of national matters, receive and report on state issues and provide feedback to management;
      • conduct of meetings including documentation, reports and logistics support for the committee.
    • Oversee the development of regional priorities and strategies for input to the national plan;
    • Provision of quarterly reports on the delivery of services, activities and issues within the State.
  • Clubs and Classes Support and Engagement:
    • Work with clubs and class associations to continually improve on the following areas (this may also include working with AS Staff to first develop, pilot/test and review the available resources):
      • Affiliation and Governance
      • Planning & Risk Management
      • Facilities
      • Workforce: Instructors, Coaches, Officials & Volunteers
      • Membership Services: Programs, Recruitment & Retention
      • Events
      • Marketing & Promotion
      • Leadership
      • Fundraising & Grants
    • Activate the AS Stakeholder Engagement Plan in the State. Work to develop great relationships and ability to influence Clubs and Class associations in the State.
    • Share best-practice from the Club Network and sport.
    • Build the reputation as a first-class support organisation, driving and developing a service culture across the organisation as a whole.
    • Take responsibility for the delivery of all conferences to be delivered in the State as agreed in the annual operational planning process. These may include:
      • Sailing Summit
      • Instructor/Coach Conference
      • Discover Sailing Centre Principal Conference/workshop
    • Provide support to Clubs and Class associations to enable them to best utilise revSPORT to suit their needs and ensure accurate member data is maintained in the database. Provide support and advice on using the functionality including SailPass.
    • Work with the Marketing and Communications team to ensure accurate, timely and effective communication of State-based initiatives and programs. Ensure alignment of State messaging with national communications plan.
  • Grow Participation:
    • Implement strategies and practices to grow the participant base throughout the State and provide pathways for participants, coaches, officials and administrators of all ages, genders and cultures throughout the State.
    • Work with Clubs to become Discover Sailing Centres to offer AS Programs.
    • Support the development of Clubs and implementation of their participation pathways. 
    • Work with accredited Discover Sailing Centres to: 
      • Increase course participants, year-on-year. 
      • Maximize their growth potential, productivity and efficiency. 
      • Apply for and then maintain their annual accreditation. 
      • Ensure the Principal, and other staff, are inducted and trained into operating a Discover Sailing Centre. 
      • Mentor Instructors and Principals and identify development opportunities. 
    • Connect clubs to schools and other organisations to grow participation. 
    • Work with Clubs and Centres to ensure the pathway from courses to membership and ongoing participation in the sport is known and understood by participants. 
  • Facilitate Workforce Training (Coaches, Instructors & Officials): 
    • Coordinate and administer training courses and connect Clubs to new instructors, officials, coaches or other workforce specialists. 
    • Build positive working relationships with Senior Instructors and Senior Coaches. 
    • Work with Clubs to recruit and train coaches, race officers and volunteers. 
    • Administration support for instructors, coaches and officials. 
    • Develop and maintain a calendar of training courses, ensuring they are visible on revSPORT.
    • Work proactively to ensure growth of qualified instructors, coaches and officials. 
    • Working with the Education & Training team and Senior Instructors, prepare and deliver an annual Instructor/Coach and Discover Sailing Centre Principal Conference/workshop. 
    • Ensure successful delivery of all AS Participation and Workforce Programs across the State. This includes compliance, report forms and reviews:
      • Discover Sailing Centres (Reviews, compliance, growth in course participants)
      • Instructor/Coach/Officials Courses (Accurate report forms)
  • ??????????????Project Involvement:
    • As agreed with the Head of Community Support & Events, take part in cross-departmental and/or cross-state project teams that will be focused on product development, support resources for Clubs or review of processes and procedures.

Who Are You? 

  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and organisational skills. 
  • Experience in customer service and working with a diverse range of stakeholders/volunteers. 
  • Willing to work evenings and weekends as required. 
  • Passionate about sailing and committed to the growth of the sport. 
  • Sailing experience, with sailing qualifications (instructor, coach, or officials) highly desirable. 
  • Must have own transportation and can travel for visits to sailing clubs throughout NSW and ACT. 

Qualifications & Experience: 

  • Required: relevant State Working with Children Check, Victorian Car Driver's License. 
  • Desirable: Sailing qualifications and/or experience, experience working or volunteering with a Sailing Club, tertiary qualifications in sport management/business/management/training, State Boat Drivers License, First-Aid Certificate.

Remuneration 

A salary package including superannuation will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
