Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) is Australia's leading authority in coastal water safety, drowning prevention, and rescue operations. With more than 198,000 members from all backgrounds and demographics across 315 affiliated Surf Life Saving Clubs (SLSCs), we represent the largest volunteer movement of its kind in Australia.
Since its establishment in 1907, Surf Life Saving has saved over 700,000 lives. Responsibilities
This position is integral to our mission, driving forward key initiatives and contributing to the overall success of our team. Your expertise will shape our strategic direction and operational efficiency, directly impacting our innovation, growth, and the maintenance of SLSA's iconic Australian brand.
- Lead, manager, and develop media and communications content and strategies, increasing brand recognition and trust amongst communities,
- Oversee and manger all day-today Public Relations activities to enhance the reputation of the SLS brand,
- Manager both incoming and outgoing media, crisis response and proactive pitches in conjunction with external agency,
- Lead and develop the Public Relations / Media team and external resources, enabling the delivery of stakeholder requirements while creating a positive, collaborative working environment,
- Ensure content is planned, designed, and executed accurately for every campaign,
- Ensure consistent brand messaging across all public relations and marketing materials,
- Oversight of external broadcast communications to the general public, and key groups such as SLS Membership,
- Develop crisis communication plans and respond to reputational threats in a timely and effective manner,
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with journalists. media outlets, and influencers,
- Monitor media coverage and sentiment, identifying opportunities and risks,
- Act as the primary point of contact with external PR Consultants
- Plan and execute press conferences and media events, and influence collaborations,
- Be the first escalation point for all team members, to resolve or assist with complex issues,
Desired Skills and Experience
Who You Are
Our ideal candidate will have:
1) Qualifications:
- Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant experience in the areas of Communications and/or Public Relations
- Demonstrated experience in a similar position
- Demonstrated experience within a high-profile brand, NFP, sports, tourism, government or membership organisation with a federated structure is highly desirable
2) Skills and Attributes:
- Demonstrated experience in Public Relations and Media Management within a high-profile organisation with a complex stakeholder matrix
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Previous experience managing a team of PR, media or Communications specialists
- Strategic thinker and problem-solver
- Ability to multitask and work effectively under pressure
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders with conflicting interests
- Proficiency in PR tools, media monitoring software, and social media platforms
