Our Basketball Magic business specialises in organising inbound and outbound tours for youth, university, and professional teams, offering valuable opportunities for development and international competition.

POSITION SUMMARY
Based in Sydney, Australia, the Technical Director will lead NBA Basketball School Australia operations under Basketball Magic. Reporting to CEO Bret Mactavish, this role includes strategic oversight, curriculum implementation, and day-to-day operations to develop young athletes both on and off the court.
The role requires deep experience in basketball operations, coaching, and administration, along with strong knowledge of the international basketball ecosystem. It also involves the coordination of inbound and outbound tours for Basketball Magic Australia.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with Basketball Magic and the NBA to design and drive a player development strategy.
- Provide detailed technical and operational updates to the NBA and Basketball Magic through reports and meetings.
- Lead the hiring, training, and management of basketball development coaches, including scheduling, education, and performance reviews.
- Act as the primary point of contact for basketball operations at NBA Basketball School Australia.
- Manage daily basketball operations and ensure curriculum delivery exceeds industry standards.
- Serve as the head of the coaching program, overseeing curriculum planning, coach mentoring, team and individual player development.
- Teach and demonstrate drills, emphasising:
- Age-appropriate instruction and player development.
- Safe, inclusive, and fun training environments.
- Promotion of NBA values, health principles, and character development.
- Mentorship of both coaches and players on and off the court.
- Regularly evaluate programs, players, and coaches to maintain best-in-class standards.
- Support the expansion and growth of NBA Basketball School Australia to reach more young athletes with an emphasis on growing female participation.
- Oversee implementation of curriculum in daily, weekly, and monthly programming.
- Organize and manage tournaments, competitions, and NBA-approved player travel experiences.
- Ensure facility standards and program quality meet NBA expectations.
- Monitor and analyse local market competitors.
- Perform additional relevant duties as required by Basketball Magic.
- Build and maintain positive relationships across all levels of Basketball Australia and other key stakeholders.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Visionary thinker with the ability to design and execute a top-tier development program.
- Internationally minded with strong awareness of global basketball systems.
- In-depth knowledge of youth basketball from grassroots to elite levels.
- Hands-on experience implementing training programs, coaching sessions, and fostering positive team culture.
- Proven coaching experience with elite youth players and coaches.
- Strong network and relationship-building skills within the Australian basketball community.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and project management ability.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (MS Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive) and other platforms like Canva.
- Experienced in staff and coach management.
- Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills.
- Professional, adaptable, and self-motivated.
- Passion for basketball and youth development.
ABOUT YOU
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum 5 years coaching experience; U.S. and Australian experience preferred.
- Experience with NBA/G-League, NBL, or elite-level coaching, playing, or evaluation is a plus.
- Minimum 5 years in basketball program development and event management (clinics, camps, tournaments, tours etc.).
- Knowledge of FIBA rules and international basketball operations.
- Marketing, social media, or advertising knowledge is an asset.
- Calm under pressure, team-oriented, and fluent in English (additional languages a plus).

- Full-Time Salary Range: $90,000 – $110,000 AUD + Superannuation
