Role Overview:
The National People and Culture Manager is a pioneering position within Volleyball Australia, leading both VA’s internal needs and the broader networks. This role involves designing and implementing a comprehensive people and culture strategy that aligns with the sport’s vision and goals. The manager will drive national-level staff and management initiatives, support state and territory stakeholders (including full-time executive managers and teams in smaller states such as Volleyball Tasmania, Volleyball ACT, and Volleyball NT), and play a key part in rolling out and managing a human resources digital management platform across the Volleyball organisations.

As a member of the Volleyball Australia Executive Team, working closely with the CFO and COO, the successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor on HR best practices, talent development, diversity, and inclusion and improve the overall employee experience across the sports network. They will also ensure compliance with employment laws and oversee multi-entity data privacy and governance.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Culture Strategy Development:
    • Design and execute a comprehensive people and culture strategy aligned with the sports vision.
    • Develop initiatives to enhance employee engagement and well-being and create a positive organisational climate.
  2. Talent Acquisition, Management and Retention:
    • Lead the recruitment process for various roles across the volleyball network to identify and attract top talent.
    • Ensure a diverse candidate pool and a smooth, engaging onboarding experience across multiple organisations.
    • Work with partners to create a working environment that facilitates talent retention.
  3. Performance Management:
    • Establish and oversee performance management systems, including goal setting, regular feedback, and performance reviews.
    • Support employee development and drive high performance across all levels of the network.
  4. Learning and Development:
    • Develop and deliver training programs that enhance employee skills, leadership capabilities, and career progression pathways.
    • Implement ongoing professional development initiatives aligned with business objectives.
  5. Employee Relations:
    • Address employee concerns and manage conflict resolution effectively.
    • Provide clear guidance on employee policies and procedures to foster positive workplace relationships.
  6. Change Management:
    • Facilitate organisational change initiatives, ensuring clear communication and support during transitions.
    • Manage the roll-out and ongoing management of the Employment Hero digital platform, working closely with all member bodies.
  7. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion:
    • Champion and implement initiatives to create a workplace where all employees feel valued and respected.
    • Identify and address potential biases within processes and practices.
  8. Compliance:
    • Ensure adherence to all relevant employment laws, safety standards, and reporting requirements.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of HR regulations and industry best practices.
  9. Stakeholder Management:
    • Collaborate with senior leadership across Volleyball Australia and member bodies to align people strategies with organisational goals.
    • Serve as a strategic HR advisor to support effective decision-making at a national level.
  10. Communication and Engagement:
    • Foster open communication channels through surveys, town halls, and other engagement methods.
    • Actively gather employee feedback and address concerns to drive continuous improvement.
  11. Multi-Entity Data Governance:
    • Manage and oversee sensitive employee data across Volleyball Australia and its member bodies.
    • Ensure strict compliance with privacy clauses and maintain robust data protection measures across multiple organisational entities.

  • Internal:
    • VA CEO (direct report)
    • VA CFO, COO, and other members of the Executive Team
    • Executive managers and HR teams within Volleyball Australia and affiliated member bodies
  • External:
    • Stakeholders and governing bodies of state and territory volleyball organisations
    • Employment Hero digital platform support teams and relevant third-party vendors

Key Requirements:
  • Qualifications & Experience:
    • A degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
    • Significant experience in a senior HR or People and Culture role, preferably within a national or multi-stakeholder organisation.
    • Proven track record in developing and executing culture, engagement, and talent management strategies.
    • Demonstrated experience with digital HR platforms; experience with Employment Hero is highly regarded.
    • Strong understanding of employment law, compliance requirements, and DEI best practices.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse groups.
    • Proven change management skills and the ability to drive transformation initiatives.
    • Strong stakeholder management skills, particularly in environments with multiple autonomous entities.
    • High ethical standards, integrity, and a strong data privacy and confidentiality commitment.
  • Other:
    • Ability to work collaboratively within an executive team.
    • Proven ability to manage sensitive information across various organisations while ensuring compliance with privacy and data protection policies.
    • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment.

Contractual Conditions:

  • Privacy and Data Governance Clauses:
    • The contract will include specific privacy clauses reflecting the unique needs of managing confidential information across Volleyball Australia and its independent member bodies.
    • The successful candidate must adhere to stringent data protection protocols and undergo periodic audits to ensure compliance.
  • Employment Platform Management:
    • A significant portion of the role will involve implementing and maintaining the Employment Hero platform, including training, support, and optimising HR processes across all member bodies.
